Moving Day
Everything seems to be in a state of "waiting" so that's what we're all doing. I need to learn to be calm because I hate the "waiting" feeling and not knowing what's going to happen next. *sigh* At least the suit cases are packed and the DOD have their hair all washed, combed out and styled. Cuz lord knows when I'll be able to do that again. I did complete the stuff on my list so that's a good thing. I even managed to wash, fold and put away the laundry. (how boring huh).
I guess I'm kinda excited about moving because there is a Mocha Moms chapter in the area where we'll be living so I'm excited about that. I do plan on joining once we get there. And there seems to be lots more people of color, LOTS more. So that gives me something else to look forward too. And there doesn't seem to be a shortage of African-centered activities either (like drumming and African dance!). Boy I tell ya, living in the Northwest was nothing short of a true culture shock for me. I now understand the true meaning of a "homogeneous population" because it's here. And the folks here ain't afraid to "express" their views about it. *shakin head* So I'll be glad I'm gone. Just sad that I'll be THAT much further away from my Cali family yet closer to my Maryland family. So that's sort of bitter sweet.
So we're off to "see the wizard" and what adventures await us next. Until the time.

I find it really interesting that you think Seattle has a homogeneous population. I've lived in the Northwest for almost a decade and spent a lot of time there and one of my observations was that one of the legacies of the housing discrimination there was a significant and distinct African American community. I went up to Seattle for all kinds of events in the community. Interesting.

I do *not* miss my time in Seattle at all and the area you live in (same place we were as well) is completely homogenous to say the least. Of course now that you're moving we'll be up there for a visit next month but we'll more than likely be through St. Louis in the near future as well. Best wishes on the move hope it goes quick and easy!

How exciting!!!! I know how it is with that hair lady :)
I was thinking about joining Mocha Moms too, but it's not in my budget right now. You gotta tell me how it's going for you once you join.
I absolutely despise being culture shocked. The first time that happened to me was when I moved from NY to Georgia so many years ago. I thought I landed on mars. Of course it had a lot to do with me being young and sheltered but still, it took a looonnnggg time for me to adjust. We've been thinking about moving outta the ATL. I don't know, we'll see.
Can't wait to hear from you after you land and get settled.
Wishing you the best! Muah~

Check Meetup.com FIRST for Mocha Moms in your area.
You'll save yourself some ca$h on the membership fee but, will still be able to join.
Hope that makes sense.
Wishing you and your family blessings on your traveling journey.
Take a pic of their hairstyles. You know I miss washing, conditioning, braiding, etc... hair! Give me a dose of what I'm missing :)

I graduated from U.C. Berkeley, and have lived in the Bay for a number of years. I love it, and was glad when we moved back after living in Michigan for six years. A high school friend of mine moved from Los Angeles to St. Louis a few years ago, and she seems to love it. Good luck with the move!
